After three weeks of negotiations Angela Merkel of the Christian Democrats (conservative party) has defeated current Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder of the SPD (liberal party). The Christian Democrats were able to gain a slight majority coalition in the lower house of the German parliament (Bundestag).
